National leader Simon Bridges has promised to overhaul the Healthy Homes Standards should his party win the election in September.
The opposition leader told TVNZ’s Q&A programme that his party would “by and large” reverse the Healthy Homes Standards, aside from insulation rules.
The standards include the progressive introduction of extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens and new heating requirements for living rooms.
The standards will be a requirement in rental properties from July 2021.
The added cost to landlords and tenants is the main motivating factor, Bridges said.
“I think the problem is they have increased the cost for renters,” he said.
Mr Bridges said he would not change the insulation rules.
